The History & Heritage of Robertson Quay

Back in the early days of Singapore’s development, the Singapore River was a hotbed of activities – filled with bumboats and traders from the Far East and India that plied their trade up and down the river.

Amongst the three main historical quays, Robertson Quay, being the furthest upstream, was one of the largest districts for the bustling trading, business and warehousing activities.

As the hub of trade and commercial activities, this intensive phase of development along the riverside persisted all the way to the 1970s, resulting in the waterway becoming incredibly polluted.

The situation got so bad that it got the attention of Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew who ordered a solution to the problem. With that, the clean-up of the Singapore River then became an important step towards urban redevelopment of the city centre:

  • 1969: PM Lee Kuan Yew asked for a plan to clean up the river but progress was slow
  • 1977: Renewed efforts to kickstart the clean up – A master plan was drawn up and the monumental task commenced and lasted for almost a full decade (included relocation, physical cleaning, and beautification)
  • In the 1990s: The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore classified it as an area for residential, commercial, and hotels.

With the help of many government entities, what was once a polluted commercial district slowly transformed into the culturally rich and picturesque riverside neighbourhood of today where many live, work and play!

Living in Robertson Quay: River Place

There are simply not many neighbourhoods in Singapore that can boast of such incredible convenience and connectivity to the city – and with a river view to seal the deal.

And that is why properties like the River Place is such an underrated gem!

Launched in 1997 and completed in 2000, River Place is a riverfront condominium located at the junction of Havelock and Clemenceau Avenue, with an unblocked view of the Singapore river.

Here are some reasons why we love the River Place:

  • Opposite the river from a stretch of cafes, dining and drinking establishments perfect for leisurely dinners and weekend brunches
  • A stone’s throw away from Clarke Quay and Fort Canning MRT station
  • Next door to the entertainment district of Clarke Quay – so that its convenient to have fun but distanced enough to enjoy peace and quiet
  • Nearby the Central Business District (CBD) – which means a short and convenient daily commute

Another key benefit of an earlier development like the River Place, is its generous apartment size! Compared to newer riverfront developments, you will be hard pressed to find spacious units like these.

  • 1 Bedroom: 687 – 925 sqft
  • 2 Bedroom: 969 – 1,292 sqft.
  • 3 Bedroom: 1,1216 – 3,649 sqft
  • 4 Bedroom: 2,056 – 3,649 sqft.

Have a large family or simply want more space for yourself? This is the perfect choice!

Enjoy swimming for exercise? Do your kids love to splash around in the water? You will be glad to know there is not one but two expansive pools to fulfil all your water activities needs! Just look at the size of the main pool in the picture below!
